SOLAN: Sale of fruit plants begins at Nauni varsity

SOLAN: The annual sale of planting material began at the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni on Wednesday. There was lot of enthusiasm among the farmers who had started arriving in the university since early morning. Besides Himachal, farmers from Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab had also reached the university to buy the planting material.
Over 40000 fruit plants were sold on the first day itself.  The sale is being conducted on first come-first serve basis at the university campus. In apple, the spur varieties were in demand among the farmers.
This year, the total number of plants available for sale at the university is over 84,000. Various varieties of apple, kiwi, pomegranate, apricot, peach, nectarine, cherry, walnut, pecan nut, persimmon, pear, plum and almond, are being provided to the farmers during the sale. The UHF’s Model Farm and the Departments of Seed Science and Fruit Science of the university have produced the planting material.
In addition to the above-mentioned plants, the various Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) and Research Stations of the university located in different parts of the state have also produced over 62,000 saplings of fruit plants, which will also be sold to the farmers. These include the KVKs at Kandaghat, Sharbo, Rohru, Chamba and the Regional Horticulture Research and Training Stations at Mashobra and Bajaura.
Due to its good quality, the planting material provided by the university is always in high demand among the farmers of Himachal and other states.
